at the starting line

By Ashley Babinecz

We often think in terms of endings, always looking toward the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. And we’ve also heard inspirational quotes reminding us that it’s not so much the destination as the journey that matters, or that it all starts with a single step. What you don’t hear as much about are all the things that came before all that, the many things that needed to happen before you can reach the illuminated end, or find yourself on that ever-important journey, or take that inaugural step. Yet without those critical moments that come before, none of the rest would matter.

Today I am taking a first step across a starting line. In a few minutes I will hit publish on my new website and blast out messages to friends, family, and colleagues past and present, announcing the launch of my coaching practice, Waterlily Coaching. And once I do, I plan to take a moment to reflect and appreciate how much it took to get to this first step.

Over the last several months, I have dedicated much of my free time to self-exploration, education, and developing new skills. I’ve reflected on my own goals as a professional and dug into why a drive to help others and leave a positive mark on the world that has always been there has suddenly bubbled to the surface, demanding my attention and action. I’ve completed the first of three requirements to earn my certification from Columbia University’s Coaching Certification Program. I’ve read books, connected with colleagues and mentors, listened to podcasts. I made the commitment to myself to officially launch my practice and built the infrastructure to make this launch possible. And today, I look back on this work - the fun parts (participating Columbia’s coaching intensive and (re)connecting with some incredible coaches), the hard parts (exploring what was driving my desire to start this new chapter and questioning myself and whether I could really, really do it), and everything in between - and I am recognizing that while it may be just the beginning, there is nothing “just” about it.

Taking time to reflect on where you’ve been and what you’ve already accomplished doesn’t come naturally to most of us. But like many things that are good for us, it requires a mindful commitment and concerted effort. And when you come out on the other side, you’ll probably feel pretty good.

So today, as I am crossing my own starting line, I have found myself at a natural moment to pause and reflect. And I challenge you, wherever you are, to take a moment to do the same. Whether you look back and see something huge (landing a new job) or something small (getting out of bed this morning when you would rather have stayed in it), you did something important and you are a step closer to wherever you hope to go next. Whether that step took you over a finish line or was just getting yourself laced up, you did it. And I am proud of you.
